Focus

Focus here means day-to-day attention. It is not a diagnosis of ADHD or another condition, and it is not a school or work treatment.

What this page is for

A distracted afternoon is not the same thing as a nutrient deficiency. This page does not show product cards, because the findings below are about deficiency and about what studies did not show.

What the reviewed sources say

“Symptoms of iron deficiency anemia include GI upset, weakness, tiredness, lack of energy, and problems with concentration and memory.”

Symptoms of iron deficiency anemia include an upset stomach, weakness, tiredness, lack of energy, and problems with concentration and memory. People with that anemia are also less able to work and exercise. The fact sheet says most people in the United States get enough iron, and that iron deficiency is still common in some groups, including young children, women under 50, and pregnant women. Those symptoms describe a deficiency. They are not evidence that an iron supplement sharpens focus in someone who is not deficient. Too much iron is harmful, and iron supplements must be kept away from children.

“Most studies show that low blood levels of vitamin B12 don’t affect the risk of cognitive decline in older people, regardless of whether they have dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.”

Vitamin B12 deficiency can include poor memory, confusion, depression, and numbness or tingling, along with tiredness from megaloblastic anemia. Deficiency can damage nerves even when anemia is absent. Most studies, the fact sheet says, show that low blood levels of vitamin B12 do not affect the risk of cognitive decline in older people, whether or not they have dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. More clinical trials are needed before anyone can say what a vitamin B12 supplement does for cognitive function in older adults. That is not a finding about a focus pill for a busy day.

How to compare a label

“The nutrition label for a dietary supplement is called a “Supplement Facts” panel.”

Start with the Supplement Facts panel. The FDA’s labeling guide uses that name for a dietary supplement’s nutrition label.

Read the ingredient name, the amount per serving, and the serving size. A blend that lists several ingredients is a different product from a bottle that is only one of them. The price on a retailer card is the package price, not a price per serving, and a sale ribbon is not a checked comparison price.

Labels you can open

These lists match a published ingredient. Opening one is not a suggestion that the ingredient meets this goal.
