Buying Magnesium? Look Past the Biggest Number
A magnesium product title says 1500mg. Farther down, the same listing gives 105 mg of magnesium per serving.
Which number belongs in your comparison?
Start with the listing. The biggest number in the title is not the amount to compare.
If you’re considering magnesium before bed, start here: compare the listed magnesium amount together with its serving size. The goal is to know what that amount describes and how many tablets or capsules it covers before adding a product to your shortlist.
The title is not the serving amount
Consider SuperSmart Magnesium Orotate. The title says “Magnesium Orotate 1500mg.” The listing reports 105 mg of magnesium per serving, across 3 capsules.
For comparing magnesium amounts, use the amount the listing reports and keep its serving size attached.
That gives you a useful habit for the next listing: whenever a number catches your eye, ask “Milligrams of what?” Then find the entry that states the magnesium amount.
One serving can mean several capsules
Now there is a second detail to check: what the listing counts as one serving.
The FDA’s labeling guide identifies ingredient quantities and serving size as information in the Supplement Facts panel. 2 Look for the magnesium entry and read it alongside “Serving Size.”
Here is how those details line up for three products:
| Product | Listed magnesium per serving | Listed serving size |
|---|---|---|
| SuperSmart Magnesium Orotate | 105 mg | 3 capsules |
| Botanic Choice Magnesium 250 mg | 250 mg | 1 tablet |
| Botanic Choice Triple Magnesium Advantage | 400 mg | 3 capsules |
These examples reflect the product information reviewed for this guide. Check the current label for the exact product you’re considering.
Look at the last two rows. The 250 mg amount belongs to one tablet. The 400 mg amount belongs to the whole three-capsule serving. Reading that second figure as 400 mg in each capsule would change its meaning.
Try reading each row as a sentence: “This product lists ___ mg of magnesium across ___ tablets or capsules.”
That sentence is a quick check: if the serving size is missing, the comparison is unfinished.
Does a larger amount mean a better bedtime choice?
A listed serving is not a personal bedtime recommendation.
These listings tell you what a serving contains. They do not establish that any featured product improves sleep.
MedlinePlus describes magnesium’s role in normal nerve and muscle function. 1
So keep two questions separate: What does this serving contain? and Is taking this supplement appropriate for me?
You now have a way to investigate the first. Take the second, along with the actual product label and your reason for considering it, to a clinician.
Try the check on your next bottle
Open a magnesium listing you’re considering and work through these three steps:
- Find the facts panel. Look beyond the product title for the magnesium amount and serving information. If the page shows only the front of the bottle, look for another product image or the retailer’s composition details.
- Write the two details together. Copy the listed magnesium amount and the number of tablets or capsules in that serving. Keep the words “per serving” in your note.
- Resolve any gap before comparing. If the amount, serving size, or relationship between two numbers is unclear, check the current label or ask the retailer. Leave an unknown field blank until you can verify it.
Save this note:
Product: ___ | Magnesium: ___ mg per serving | Serving size: ___ tablets/capsules
Then use it to explore current magnesium offers on Zynava. When comparing prices, check that the retailer listing matches the exact product and bottle size you mean to buy.
Before you compare prices, make sure you know what you’re comparing.
